Hi, I am really grateful for your influence in my design work and I have given my class a preview of your work. We are a (very) small academy in a pretty big school in Santa Barbara and ANY time you are in Cali you are welcome here. We are kinda the underdogs in a big, stylish, city but we make do. I wish you so much more success and happiness. You are clearly a wacky, fun, guy and I hope you can influence my students more in the future. I just wanted to say thanks for sharing.

And that book by kuweyama…damn. The simplicity is the Beauty. It's a couple times a day where I have to whip open up my little calculator app to get a decimal equivalent. Be it for a patch 3/8 (.375) of the day, or a decal 7/16" (.4375") away from the edge. Or even a tolerance on a poster trap at 3/32 (.09375") where the colors overlap.

When did you realize you wanted to be a designer?

When you ask how I fit it all in, I suspect you ask how I fit design into my life? But I have to say, I kind of flip it around the other way. How do I fit life into my designing? I work way more than I should, I’m betting.

What does your typical work day look like?

Glad to meet awesome person like you Aaron. I’m so pissed at myself that I missed your speech at Y conference. Is there any way that a guy 1000 miles away from Mancato could watch your 14 rules and 4 hour logo talk? If there is, a link would be appreciated. I had a great time at your keynote for the Savannah Geekend tonight. Probably the best presentation I’ve seen at any of these conferences in a long time.

Anyway, a national campaign that could mobilize 100,000 “time gifters” each donating 100 hrs a year would yield 10 million donated hours. I saw your speech at the AIGA Conference last weekend and it was very inspiring. I saw him at AIGA and he seemed well. You should take comfort in knowing that he got to see you give such a wonderful, inspiring, presentation that showed how much you loved him and your Mom. I shared your work with my business partner/designer and there are a ton of similarities in your designs…Keep up the good work.. One thing that hit me hard was the importance of friends and the ability to do good work for them.

On the most important lesson he’s learned from his life as a designer

I’ve always designed logos just because I loved it. I did it for my dad’s projects growing up and I’m not professionally trained. I can’t stand such pretentious design houses - probably simply because I feel intimidated. But your video really encouraged me to just do it cos I love it.

What three pieces of advice would you share with aspiring designers looking to follow in your footsteps?

They come back toyou for helping with a menu for their restaurant, or whatever it’s going to be. At the time, I was working at asnowboarding magazine, I met a lot of people there, and I tried to be a goodlittle worker. If they needed help, if they needed a little extra favour done,I would do these things, and I started to get calls to say, “Hey, youhelped us at the magazine really well.

Then, building the pieces into a presentation for the client. After you get feedback, you do it again. And you go back and forth a handful of times until something awesome pops out. It takes work, diligence, and good communication. And that’s how I’ve done it all these years. Funny enough, it’s always the underdogs.

In our conversation he said he knew you and that I should reach out to you. Your logo video is blowing up on social media. So I just saw you at the AIGA gathering..I came here to check you out, your state posters are amazing….only one thing, where is Indiana? Maybe you could come here and we can show you how amaze we are! I share you love and appreciation of the great design from back in the day.

I didn’t really even know what a graphic designer was, but I knew I wanted to be into art. It goes all the way back to skateboarding. We were making our own grip tape graphics, our own stickers and our own little goodies. We didn’t really know any better.

But those are the big ones. I remember all the tiny ones too. One time in Des Moines, with 25 people there. Just want to thank you for the selfie and the exciting talk you gave at UNI last night. It was the best laugh and refreshing talk I have attended in a long time.
